Kota Kinabalu: The 5th World Wu Clan Convention will be held in Kuala Lumpur from Dec 15 to 17 this year.Announcing this, President of the Malaysia Wu Clan Association, Dato' James Ng said the Kuala Lumpur Wu Clan Association (of which he is Chairman) is organising the convention for the first time.

"It is going to be a fabulous event. We have started making the necessary preparations although the convention is 10 months away. We expect about 2,000 to 3,000 delegates from all over the world.

China alone has 300 branches, particularly in the Guangxi, Guangdong, Fujian and Hainan Provinces.

We also have a few branches in Shanghai," he said at the 2017 Chinese New Year Dinner Celebration organised by the Sabah Wu Clan Association at a leading restaurant, Wednesday.

Kuala Lumpur Wu Clan Association and Sabah Wu Clan Association are among the 19 branches of the Malaysia Wu Clan Association throughout the country.

According to Ng, this time around, the focus of the convention will be on youth progress and development as a way of encouraging youths to attend the world event.

"Towards this end, we are introducing a new initiative in the form of the inaugural World Wu Youth Excellence Award.

Contenders for the award must be successful entrepreneurs in the 45 years and below age range.

"Each prospective candidate must be nominated by a valid Wu Clan branch in China, Taiwan or any Southeast Asian country, including Malaysia," he explained.

Calling for support from the Sabah Wu Clan Association, Ng described its Chairman Ng Pan Tai as a good and responsible leader with a passion and commitment for the growth of the association.

Ng and Organising Chairman Foo Thong Chai also spoke.

Historically, the first Wu generation emerged from Wu Xin City in China (next to Nanjing City) about 3,200 years ago.

Harbour City developer Eliza Goh, who officiated at the event, said the Chinese Lunar New Year is the most important event for the Tionghua community.

She opined that the tradition of reunion dinner, ang pow-giving and wearing new clothes is only on a superficial level.

"To experience the real meaning of Chinese New Year, we must bring true happiness and peace to one's family, learn from previous mistakes and move forward with new hopes or aspirations, as well as to strengthen filial piety," she said.

Goh said, in Chinese philosophy, filial piety is a virtue of respect for one's parents, elders and ancestors.

"Most importantly, we should instil moral values in our younger generation so that they can build self-esteem and self-restraint for better lives."

Guests and association members were entertained by the Che Sui Khor Moral Uplifting Society KK Lion Dance Troupe, a local dance club and singers from the Wu Clan. Also present was the Chairman of the United Association of Chinese Clans Sabah, Datuk Ling Tiong Chai. - Mary Chin
