KUANTAN: The parents of the three children found drowned at a former bauxite mining pool in Taman Sungai Karang Jaya here on Saturday have appointed a lawyer to commence legal action.Lawyer Mohd Harris Abdullah said he had met and received the consent of Mohd Sharif Awang Ngah, 50, Nor Habibah Aidil, 50, and Aidil Omar, 78, namely, parents and grandfather of Nureen Ain Juwita, 10, one of the victims in the incident.

He said Zuhairi Syukor, 51, and his wife Nor Azilah Muzaffar Shah, 32, via telephone, also consented that he sought justice over the deaths of their children, Salsabila, 12, and Mahathir Mohamad, seven.

"After getting the consent of the families, we will begin investigation to identify the responsible parties.

To date, based on early statements, the land owner is in Penang.

"We will also investigate who holds the licence there. It is understood the licence from PTG (State Land and Mines Department) is for work to move earth not to mine," he said when contacted here Thursday.

He also did not rule out filing a suit against Pahang PTG if there were elements of negligence by the agency for issuing a licence without appropriate monitoring.

"Nevertheless, all will be scrutinised before the suit is filed. We expect the investigation to take a month before it is followed by further actions," he said.

At 5pm on Saturday, the three children were found drowned at the mine purportedly when trying to retrieve the pants of Salsabila's younger brother, Mohamad Aiman Hakimi, 10, in the mine.

The mine, which was located near their housing area, was believed to be operating illegally on private land before it was abandoned since the bauxite moratorium was enforced on Jan 15, 2016. – Bernama
