RM18 million Petronas CSI for Sabah
Kota Marudu: Petronas will be investing RM18 million for the wellbeing of communities in the rural areas of the State over a span of four years. The funds would be released in stages under three initiatives, namely Planting Tomorrow, Food Basket and Youth Development, benefiting thousands in several districts.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman, who was grateful of this, said the allocation showed the national oil company was indeed concerned about the wellbeing of Sabah communities, especially those in the rural areas.

"These programmes organised by the oil company will benefit the communities, as well as in the areas of preparation of amenities and also conservation, for which Sabah is renowned for its policies," he said at the launching of the Petronas Corporate Social Investment (CSI) programme for Sabah, here, Thursday.

Petronas had invested a total of RM184.8 million from 2011 to 2016 through numerous community initiatives, including RM83 million set aside for the creation of the Tropical Forest Research Complex in Imbak Canyon through collaboration with Yayasan Sabah.

Also present were Petronas Chairman Tan Sri Sidek Hassan and members of the State Cabinet.

Under the Planting Tomorrow programme, some 1,000 residents in Pitas, Kota Marudu and Tongod will enjoy clean water supply, skill training in agriculture and also homestay.

Under the Food Basket initiative, some 700 children from the hardcore poor background in Lahad Datu, Kudat, Tuaran and Beaufort will receive nutritious food packs in school, in collaboration with the Health Department.

The Youth Development initiative will involve collaboration with the Sabah Football Association (Safa) to train the young to become future football players.

"This assistance will certainly boost the wellbeing of the communities and in line with the call of the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Datuk Seri Najib Razak who wants corporate bodies to go down to the grassroots to assist those in need," said Musa.

He also urged officers overseeing the execution of the initiatives to constantly monitor the progress of the three programmes and ensure they are completed on time and full utilisation of the fund.

Meanwhile, Sidek said the three initiatives are the first announced by Petronas under its corporate social responsibility for this year and that more are being planned until end of year.

"Petronas is also planning the construction of a new Mara Science College in Ranau and two rural hostels," he said.

He said Petronas wants those who benefit from these initiatives would come out useful to improve their livelihood as a return of its investments. - Jason Santos
