Kota Kinabalu: There is nothing to suggest that genuine MyKads are being issued fraudulently in the State but Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) Acting President Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili wants such allegations to be thoroughly investigated.Ongkili said both the Federal and State governments will not compromise on the issuance of legal, genuine Malaysian identification cards.

"Based on our own internal investigation, it has been revealed that there is no such thing although we know that the police have arrested some people who are believed to have done so.

"But none has been charged yet," he said after hosting a Chinese New Year luncheon for Sabah's media practitioners, here, Thursday.

Ongkili, who is also Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister, said immediate measures should be taken on dubious MyKad issuance if any allegation of such activities are proven true.

"There are two types of concerns in the issuance of dubious MyKads…the first being fake MyKads which they obtained from syndicates which are illegal and invalid.

"But, of course, we have asked for constant monitoring and actions to be taken on these syndicates.

"The other type is genuine MyKads which were claimed by certain quarters to be issued by government officials without due respect for the law and procedures.

"Again, actions have to be taken. If the public have any information about this matter, they must report it to the police or provide the information to us."

He also reminded the public to provide accurate information as most of it is only hearsay.

Meanwhile, Ongkili disclosed that the Finance Ministry has agreed to exempt stamp duty on native title transactions.

However, the exemption will not cover memorandums except for customary lands, he said.

Previously, the Finance Ministry had suspended the proposed imposition of stamp duty on native title transactions.

The decision was made after Ongkili raised the issue with Finance Minister II Datuk Johari Abdul Ghani, stressing that the move was causing unnecessary burden to the people.

On the impending general election, Ongkili stated his confidence on reclaiming the seats that they had lost in the previous election.

"Now, we have 13 more seats and we have been reviewing our position and ground analysis.

"And we are confident that we can win back the seats that we had lost as we believe that there are signs of people putting their trust in us again, believing that we can still be a 'loud voice' inside the Barisan Nasional (BN) fold.

"But, of course, we have to work very hard," he said, reiterating that PBS' fight had never been compromised.

"And we believe that the people are wise as they also need a party that can fight for them as well as for the State's rights and equal development, among others.

"I do not think the opposition parties whether they are KL or Sabah-based can do better than BN," he said. - Ricardo Unto
