Kota Kinabalu: Kota Kinabalu Journalists Association (KKJA) Chairman Yong Ted Phen assured that its members will continue to observe high professionalism in discharging their duties. He said the life of a journalist involved a lot of hard work.

"Our responsibility is to put out fair, unbiased and accurate news to the public. On this note, I wish to salute all journalists for exhibiting high professionalism in their work," he said.

Yong cited the recent boat tragedy off Pulau Mengalum waters which happened on the first day of Chinese New Year, in which several Chinese tourists perished while many others were injured.

To date, five victims are still missing, he said.

"As soon as news of the capsize incident broke out, many journalists returned to work at once despite the Chinese New Year holidays.

"This group of dedicated journalists rushed from one place to another trying to gather more information and even waited by the jetty way past midnight for the latest update in order to bring accurate, objective reports on the tragedy to the public," said Yong, at the KKJA Chinese New Year luncheon held at Dewan Hakka, here, Saturday.

He also extended his deepest condolences to the victims' families.

"We are hoping for a miracle for the remaining victims to be found soon.

"After the incident, the Federal and State governments, along with relevant agencies, have immediately launched a Search and Rescue (SAR) mission and taken a series of measures to rectify issues.

"With better measures in place, we fervently hope that such accidents will not recur," he said.

Yong also expressed appreciation to KKJA honorary advisor Datuk Francis Goh for presenting education fund to members' children.

"I believe the education fund will help lessen the financial burden of our members and encourage their children to study harder," said Yong.

Also present was Minister of Special Tasks Datuk Teo Chee Kang who represented Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman, Consul-General of the People's Republic of China in Kota Kinabalu, Her Excellency Chen Peijie, Federation of Chinese Associations Sabah (FCAS) President Datuk Seri T.C.
