PETALING JAYA: The most anticipated fight in the local football scene is on – Tan Sri Annuar Musa will come up against his nemesis Johor Crown Prince Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim for the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) president post. The face-off comes after Tunku Ismail, or TMJ as he is better known, and Annuar, the former Kelantan Football Association president, became embroiled in a war of words over the latter's involvement in the sponsorship controversy of the Kelantan football team.

TMJ had raised the question of Annuar obtaining sponsorship for the Kelantan football team through Pelaburan Mara and Universiti Kuala Lumpur, eventually leading the Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) council to suspend Annuar.

Tunku Ismail, who is also the owner of Johor Darul Ta'zim Football Club, submitted his candidacy to FAM general secretary Datuk Hamidin Mohd Amin Monday, just mere hours before the deadline for submissions at 5pm.

"Crown Prince of Johor follows Sultan of Johor's (Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar) decree to contest for FAM presidency to change Malaysian football landscape," the Johor Southern Tigers Facebook page posted Monday, reported theSundaily.

The post was accompanied by pictures of Tunku Ismail signing the candidacy document as Sultan Ibrahim and Hamidin look on.

Attempts to get a response from Annuar were unsuccessful at press time.

FAM, through its Facebook page, confirmed that only those two candidates would be vying for the presidency.

"Also, there are four confirmed candidates to contest for the FAM deputy president post, nine for vice-president, and 17 male and seven female executive committee candidates," it said.

Initially, Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin and former Home Ministry secretary-general Tan Sri Aseh Che Mat had also said they would contest the top FAM post.

However, Khairy had said that he would opt out should Tunku Ismail decide to run for the post.

"My stand has not changed (from last month). If Tunku wants to contest, then there's no need for me to be there.

I have a lot of other things to do too," he told a press conference earlier Monday.

Khairy was initially expected to hand over his nomination acceptance form to Hamidin before the deadline Monday.

The new FAM president will be announced during the national football congress on March 25.
