Stealing spare tyres: Two men arrested

Kota Kinabalu: Police here arrested two unemployed local men for stealing spare tyres in the city. A 40-year-old local Chinese mechanic suspected to be involved in buying stolen goods was also picked up for questioning. City Police Chief ACP M. Chandra on Saturday said the trio were detained following a police report lodged by a man who found his spare vehicle tyre missing on Thursday.

The 30-year-old man, who works for the Sabah Water Department, had parked the department- owned vehicle, a Toyota Fortuner TRD Sport 2.7, along Jalan KK Lama 1, Tong Hing, about 7.50pm that day.The man returned about 40 minutes later to find the vehicle's spare tyre missing. Acting on the information, police from the city's Criminal Investigations Department nabbed a 33-year-old local Bajau man at Jalan Berunggis in Tuaran, about 11.10am, on Friday. Twenty-minutes later, the team arrested his accomplice, a 37-year-old local Bajau man at Taman Sri Rugading in the same district.

The arrest of the duo, led to the Chinese mechanic who is believed to be a buyer of stolen goods. The man was picked up at Kampung Marabahai Tambalang in Tuaran about five minutes after midnight on Saturday.

Police seized a Perodua Viva, a spanner and two iron rods which have been modified for removing spare tyres. Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.

All three have been convicted for drug offences previously, with one also convicted for theft in 2016.Chandra again reminded the people to make sure their vehicles are properly secured and to install second locks to spare tyres to prevent theft. - Sherell Ann Jeffrey
