Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Fire and Rescue Department has once again proven to be a force to be reckoned with not only when it comes to handling emergencies but also in sports, marching efficiency and even cooking skills. Last year, the department emerged champions when they took home 21 gold medals, 13 silver medals and 10 bronze medals in the Sukan Bomba Malaysia (Sukbom 2016) held in Negeri Sembilan.

The department also retained the overall champion title in the Marching Efficiency Competition held at Kuala Kubu Baru the same year.

Not only that, two officers from the Sabah Fire and Rescue Department, namely Edward Breatos and Rudy Fedelis were picked to represent the Malaysia Fire and Rescue Department at the Singapore-Global Firefighters and Paramedic Challenge.

The best orator at the Fire and Rescue National level and also the Ministry of Welbeing, Housing and Local Government level also went to the Sabah Fire and Rescue Department's very own Mohd Fauzi Jamika.

In addition to the essential work as firefighters, efficiency in the marching competition, ability in the track and field, the department also has two great 'chefs' who came out champions in the 'Bomba Didapur' cooking competition.

Zaihat Abdullah and her cooking partner Awang Alak Batatar took home the title after they stole the jury's heart with local Sabah cuisine in the contest.

"The ability of our men and women in the Sabah Fire and Rescue Department is undeniable.

They have proven to be the best among the best and have raised the prestige of the department," said Sabah Fire and Rescue Department Director Nordin Pauzi.

"This success is our success together, without the efforts and commitment from everyone, this success would not have been achieved."

He said this during a dinner held in appreciation for his men and women in the force on Friday.

Also present was his Deputy Zuraidah Latip, among others.

The ceremony was also held to appreciate members of the media who Nordin said have helped in uplifting the department's image.

"As we are all aware that our country is heading towards a developed nation status by the year 2020, and today, in support of this national agenda, we need to ensure the department remains relevant and competitive even though we are separated by the South China Sea.

"We should always implement improvements and reforms in every planning and work in order to become a more effective work force with high quality," he said, hoping the year 2017 will bring more success for the department. - Sherell Ann Jeffrey
