Bigger majority for Adenan's widow

Kuala Lumpur: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak is confident that Datuk Amar Jamilah Anu from Barisan Nasional, who won the Tanjong Datu by-election, Saturday, will bring in more progress and continous development to the constituency. Commenting on her landslide victory, he said Jamilah was now the best person to continue the legacy left by her late husband Tan Sri Adenan Satem, who was the incumbent and Sarawak's fifth chief minister. "Congratulations to BN candidate Puan Sri Jamilah Anu who was elected by the Tanjong Datu voters to be their assemblyman. Long live Barisan!" Najib said via his Facebook and Twitter accounts. ADVERTISEMENT Jamilah defeated Sarawak Reform Party's (STAR) Johnny Aput and Rapelson Richard Hamit from Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak (PBDS) Baru by a majority of 6,443 votes.She polled 6,573 votes while Johnny Aput managed only 108 votes and Rapelson just 130 votes. Both her opponents lost their deposits.Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi expressed his thanks to the voters in the constituency for electing Jamilah. Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg said Jamilah's win by an even bigger majority was beyond expectations.

He said that it was also a very sweet victory because BN's objective to have the two opposition candidates in the fray to lose their deposits was met. The by-election was called following the death of the incumbent Tan Sri Adenan Satem, who was also Sarawak's fifth Chief Minister, due to heart complications on Jan 11. He was 72.In the last Sarawak state election held on May 11 last year, Adenan had defeated PKR candidate Jazolkipli Numan by a majority of 5,892 votes. He obtained 6,360 votes while Jazolkipli only managed 468 votes.
