Man with 5kg Syabu held in Tawau
Tawau: A 46-year-old suspected drug trafficker from Selangor was arrested after police found syabu weighing 5,071.62 grammes worth RM350,000 hidden in his luggage at the airport here Friday.District Police Chief ACP Fadil Marsus said the suspect was nabbed after he arrived from Kuala Lumpur on an AirAsia flight at 10.45am.

Acted on a tip-off, he said a team of policemen comprising nine personnel, including two officers, from the Narcotic Crime Investigation Department and Tawau police led by ASP Ederian Masaat made the arrest at the arrival gate.

"The suspect was carrying a black luggage and a sling bag and further inspection revealed two boxes hidden among the clothes inside the luggage.

"The first box bearing 'Bird's Nest with Rock Sugar' contained two packets wrapped in a foil and the second box bearing 'Impulse Sealer' contained another three items wrapped in a foil.

"All five packets, each containing a packet of Chinese Tea wrapped with carbon paper, contained a plastic packet filled with the drug substance believed to be syabu," Fadil said in a press conference here Saturday.

He said police believed there are other suspects linked to the case that investigations are underway.

Fadil said the syabu is believed to be meant for the local market and neighbouring country and that the suspect has had two previous convictions for drug-related cases in the peninsula in 2012.

He said the suspect who operates a cyber café has been remanded for seven days and is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952 that carries the death sentence and Section 15(1) of the same Act for testing positive for drugs. - Lagatah Toyos
