Swiss software firm to create 500 jobs for locals

GEORGE TOWN: Luxoft, a Swiss-based software development outsourcing firm, has opened its new office in Penang, with the promise of 500 information technology-related jobs for locals in the next five years.Luxoft president and chief executive officer Dmitriy Loschinin said the opening of its new office was part of its expansion plans into the Asia-Pacific region.

"There is tremendous human capital in the region. We have been very picky about where we want to do business.

We feel we can find the right talent in Penang.

"We have brought in a few clients here and they are impressed by the facilities and the talent pool available here.

"In the next five years, we expect to hire 500 people," Loschinin said in his opening address at Luxoft's new office at Wawasan Open University, Northam Road here.

Also launched was Luxoft's Automotive Software University in Penang, a three-month attachment programme to train local engineering talent in the automotive sector. Launching Luxoft's new office was Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng. Also present was Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation chief operating officer Ng Wan Peng.

Lim said Luxoft's set-up would have a human capital and technology investment value of RM235 million over the next five years. Luxoft is a global IT service provider with more than 11,500 expert skilled software engineers working on solutions for businesses.

It currently serves automotive, telecom, financial and energy sectors around the world.

Some of its clients include IBM, Ford, Panasonic, Boeing and UBS.

It currently serves more than 150 clients through its 38 offices in 18 countries around the world.

Penang is one of them.

The Penang office's initial focus will be on the automotive, finance solutions and internet-of-things industries.

Besides Penang, there are three other offices in the Asia-Pacific region – Ho Chi Minh City, Singapore and Sydney.

One of Luxoft's clients is Clarion Malaysia, based in Penang.

It develops software for in-car entertainment and infotainment systems.
