Blitz on KK illegal squatters and illegals
MANGGATAL: Twenty six people were made homeless after their squatter homes constructed on government land in Kg Kibagu were demolished by City Hall, Tuesday.According to City Hall Assistant Enforcement Officer Insp. Mohd Romzi Musa, the squatters had been notified of the operation two weeks ago.

"Actually, we marked 12 houses for demolition but the other two houses are still under investigation to determine whether they have encroached onto government land," he said, adding that the relevant authorities also cut off illegal electricity and water connections to the affected houses.

He said of the 10 households, six were local families while the remaining four were foreigners with legal documents.

"We had to take decisive action to demolish the houses that were constructed without approval from City Hall and local authorities in particular," he said.

Unfortunately, he said, City Hall does not provide temporary shelter for the families.

"They had to stay with their relatives or friends.

I would like to advise those living in squatters to rectify their situation so as to avoid a similar fate from happening to them," he said.

Meanwhile, 15 people, including five children, were roped in during an integrated operation against illegal immigrants at four locations in Inanam and Manggatal, Tuesday.

The five-hour operation lasted from 1.30am to 6.30am involving three officers and 43 personnel from the Kota Kinabalu police headquarters.

According to City Police Chief ACP M. Chandra, 35 people including 11 children were inspected and three men and five women aged between 24 and 53 as well as five children aged between two and 15 were apprehended.

"Two of four men who tested for drugs were also arrested under Section 15 of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952," he said.

Chandra added that the operation focused on these locations as they have the potential to become criminal dens as well as drug trafficking spots.

The operation also saw City Hall personnel marking squatter homes for demolition and Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd also cut off illegal electrical connections in the squatter areas. - Tracy Patrick
