Kudat: Residents in Banggi Island and Kudat are upset they are not entitled to the special half price rates on ferry rides enjoyed by those plying between Labuan and Kota Kinabalu and questioned why the Barisan Nasional elected representative kept quiet about it all these years.According to the Sabah PKR Wanita Chief Rahimah Majid, questions have been raised as to whether they have been sidelined from the 50 per cent government subsidy on ferry fares the last four years.

"The people here are crying foul of this discrimination. It is an unfair treatment.

Most of those in Banggi are smalltime fishermen and farmers, but were asked for the full fare each time they need to go to Kudat," she said.

Rahimah said the Kota Kinabalu-Labuan route is not only one enjoying good discounts, the same was offered on the Labuan-Menumbok, Labuan-Sipitang, Limbang-Labuan and Lawas-Limbang routes.

The half price discount that started in January 2013 also includes commercial vehicles registered with the Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board on the same routes.

"Why are the poor people in Banggi left out of such subsidy? What is the logic?"

"PKR wonders why the people's representatives from the ruling party in the affected areas have been so quiet," said Rahimah, adding that the party had gathered over 1,000 signatures to request for the same discount from the government and also compensate their losses over the last four years.

Currently there are two ferries under a single operator servicing the Kudat-Banggi route.
