Tenom: A former government servant is now supplying fruits such as bananas, oranges and pomelos to other regions for good returns.Francis Lind, 63, from Kg Batu 8 Sapong, said he was a little disappointed that his career as a government employee for Sabah Padi Board came to an end after the state agency closed in the 1970s.

But he has had no regrets given his desire to be independent and to have his 16 acres of land planted with various crops.

"Of course in the beginning, the challenge was too strong for me to deal with it ... but with patience and perseverance, eventually all these challenges were overcome," he told reporters on Tuesday.

Francis was grateful that he inherited the 16 acres estate containing rubber trees from his parents, and took the drastic action to cut down some of the rubber trees to make way for fruit trees because the price of rubber then was not stable.

After that, he decided to plant bananas and pomelos because both these fruits fetched a good market price and were stable commodities unlike rubber.

Francis said his average annual yield amounts to over RM20,000 but after deducting the costs he will get about RM18,000.

Neighbouring Brunei is the best market for bananas through an agent from Sarawak and as for his pomelos, an agent from Kota Kinabalu comes twice a month to buy for export. - Mail Mathew
