Specialist doctor faces 7 counts of tax evasion

SHAH ALAM: A specialist doctor at a private medical centre was charged in the Magistrate's Court here Wednesday with seven counts of evading to pay income tax, totalling more than RM700,000.Dr Ahmad Nizar Jamaluddin, 56, was not in court Wednesday and was represented by Rudy Kurniawan Usman, who pleaded not guilty to all the charges before Magistrate Khairul Nizam Abu Bakar.According to the court interpreter, Dr Ahmad Nizar had submitted a letter of authority to the court to inform that he was not able to be in court for Wednesday's proceeding and would be represented by Rudy Kurniawan.ADVERTISEMENT The doctor was charged with wilfully and with intent to evade paying tax for the amount which should have been included in Form BE for the assessment year 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013, resulting in less tax of RM729,968.25.The amount of tax he was supposed to pay for 2007 was RM66,414.60; RM123,326.82 (2008), RM120,017.43 (2009), RM104, 760. 76 (2010), RM97,583.72 (2011), RM89,545.30 (2012) and RM128,319.62 (2013).The tax was for income totalling RM2.763 million. The charges were made under 114 (1)(a) of the Income Tax Act 1967 which provides a fine of up to RM20,000, or imprisonment for up to three years, or both, and shall pay a special penalty of treble the amount of tax which had been undercharged on each count, upon conviction.ADVERTISEMENT The court set March 15 for mention.
