Kuala Lumpur: The North Korean Embassy in Malaysia has demanded the release of three suspects nabbed by the police recently over the assassination of Kim Jong-nam. The three are a Vietnamese woman, an Indonesian woman, and a North Korean citizen.

In a statement, the embassy accused the police of being "unreasonable" in arresting the three suspects.

"Malaysia has been conducting the investigation based on CCTV footage that was released to the public, and (on) the delusion that the female suspects had daubed poison on the victim's face with their own hands.

"Then how is it possible that these female suspects could be alive after the incident?

"This means that the liquid they daubed for a joke is not a poison and that there is another cause of death for the deceased.

"(Bases on this), they should immediately release the innocent women from Vietnam and Indonesia, as well as North Korean citizen Ri Jong Chol, who were arrested unreasonably," the statement read.

The North Korean embassy accused Malaysia of performing an "illegal act of infringing international laws, customs and diplomatic privileges and at the same time, a clear evidence that Malaysia takes sides with South Korean allegations."

Last Monday, Jong-nam, half-brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, was attacked at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (KLIA2) while waiting to board a flight to Macau.

He was approached by two women, one of whom grabbed him from behind and wiped his face with an apparently poisonous liquid.

The two women, including another North Korean citizen, were arrested by police for further investigation.

"It has been 10 days since the incident happened, but Malaysian police have not found any evidence from the arrested suspects," the statement added.

Earlier, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar had revealed that the female suspects applied toxic substance on the deceased with their bare hands.

He also said the pair had carried out 'practice runs' at shopping malls in KL before carrying out the act on Jong-nam.
