Kota Kinabalu: A 40-year-old engineer from Sarawak was nabbed for allegedly uttering the word "bomb" during a baggage security check at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport, Wednesday. The Chinese man who lives in Brunei has since been detained at the central lockup for criminal intimidation.

His detention came after a report was lodged by a 34-year-old Customer Service Officer who heard him uttering the word "bomb" while conducting baggage security checks at the airport.

City Police Chief ACP M. Chandra said initial findings showed that during baggage security checks, the woman asked one of the passengers on the Royal Brunei Airlines flight whether there were any dangerous items in the luggage to which the man replied "bomb".

The man apologised when the officer warned him not to say that word but the woman's colleague who overheard the conversation advised her to remove the passenger's name and his luggage from the plane and to lodge a police report.

Chandra said inspections showed that the man came to Sabah to visit and to bring his sister back to Brunei, adding that no prohibited items were found in the man's luggage which was confiscated.

Uttering certain words especially when it concerns matters of security is taken seriously in international airports across the country.

Last September, a 62-year-old Pakistani was charged with threatening to hijack a plane when he allegedly uttered the words "I am hijacking your airplane" to the female staff of the airline counter at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport. - Sherell Ann Jeffrey
