Kota Kinabalu: Sports is not simply aimed at determining the champion or winners of an event, according to Karambunai Assemblywoman Datuk Jainab Ahmad. She said the important thing is that the arena provides direct awareness to students and athletes that success can only be achieved through continuous efforts, perseverance in training, careful training and sacrifice particularly where time and energy is concerned.

"There is no short cut to success except through unwavering struggle and commitment to achieve that dream," said the Community Development and Consumer Affairs Minister.

"Sports is one of the best platforms to produce students who are physically active, intelligent and obedient.

"It indirectly shapes virtuous athletes who are responsible, disciplined and have a strong identity," she said when officiating at the closing ceremony of SM All Saints 67th Annual Sports Ceremony at the school's field here, on Thursday.

SM All Saints has a record of success in the field of sports, and among the outstanding achievements the school has had at international level is when it sent one representative to represent Malaysia in golf at the Asean School Games in 2015 and 2016.

The school also sent about 15 of its athletes to compete in national level tournaments which includes tennis, sailing, ping pong, squash, taekwondo, karate as well as track and field.

"Such success is what spurred athletes and teachers to continue to train and bring more glory to SM All Saints, I also believe that the success is due to support from parents because without this support, the school might not be able to produce excellent athletes," said Jainab.

She said close collaboration between teachers, students and parents should continue to be nourished because these children are the hope of the nation.

"I also believe that no matter how far we go, we must never forget our roots, we must maintain our culture, respect our elders and to love one another.

"As a mother, this is what I always remind my children, I do my level best to balance between family and work," she said.

Jainab also again reminded parents to monitor their children especially when it comes to the use of the Internet.

"There is good and bad when surfing the Internet, do not think that everyone is our friend when it comes to the Internet, parents lets work as a team and make sure our children utilise the Internet wisely," she said.

Jainab who is also Malaysian Drug Prevention Association (Pemadam) National Vice President and State Pemadam Chairperson said she plans to have an anti-drug awareness programme in the school.

"I would also like to have a discussion with parents and relevant authorities on this matter, perhaps we can hold the meeting at this school and together we can boost awareness on the dangers of drugs," she said.

Meanwhile, team Collier emerged overall champions in the school's annual sports event after beating three other teams, namely Leggatt who came in second, followed by Henthorne and Paisley.
