Hit-run death of girl: Indon jailed, fined

Tawau: A 25-year-old Indonesian man was jailed a total of 38 months and fined RM5,000 by the Magistrate's Court here, Thursday, for causing the death of a girl and escaping and also for possession of a stolen motorcycle.Nasdar Tahir @ Iwan, a prisoner for entering Malaysia illegally, pleaded guilty on both counts before Magistrate Muhammad Faizal Che Saad.He was jailed 30 months and fined RM5,000 in default eight months' jail for the hit-and-run death of one Kartika Jeni, a Timorese, at Jalan Wakuba-Inderasabah about 10am on Nov 13, 2016.

The girl was on the left side of the road when the accused lost control of the Proton Waja and hit the victim who was thrown about 38 metres away. He fled the scene despite the front passenger telling him to slow down after seeing the kid on the road.Acting on a tip-off, the accused was detained by a team of policemen led by ASP Joan Lee at Fung Ngiap kongsi house in Pasir Putih about 3pm five days later.The post-mortem report showed the victim died from spinal, abdominal and rib injuries.Nasdar was also jailed eight months by the same court for having stolen items comprising a motorcycle at Fung Ngiap kongsi house in Pasir Putih about 3pm on November 18, 2016.

The motorcycle was seized on the same day and further investigation showed the Butan SYM BX110 motorcycle bearing the registration number ST 967 X was taken from one Noor Azmin Minggu without his knowledge. The accused had used the motorcycle for personal use.

The court ordered the accused to serve the sentences consecutively and to be referred to the Immigration Department after that.Nasdar was charged under Section 41(1) of the Road Transportation Act 1987 (Act333/87), which carries up to 10 years' imprisonment and a fine of up to RM20,000 upon conviction.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.
