Mercury spill at K'gau school
Keningau: A 31-year-old teacher and two 13-year-old students were exposed to a mercury spill after a thermometer broke at the SMK Ken Hwa laboratory, here, Thursday. "One of the students was exposed on the neck, while the teacher and another student exposed on the hands," said Keningau Zone Fire and Rescue Chief Abu Hassan Mohd Nawi.

The three were rushed to the hospital before a team of eight personnel from the Fire and Rescue's Hazardous Material Handling Team (Hazmat) arrived at the scene located some three kilometres away.

The team arrived about 9.53am and began cleaning operations which ended at 10.58am (pic).

"The team contacted the hospital laboratory who suggested that they used sterisorb, a form of powder used to clean waste from hospitals.

"After obtaining the materials, the team rushed to the scene, wearing full protection gear equipped with respirators, to clean the laboratory."

Last year, the Hazmat team was also called in after a mercury spillage was reported in the laboratory of SM St Michael in Penampang.
