Kota Kinabalu: Refusing to stop when ordered to do so by police landed two men in hospital when their vehicle crashed along Jalan Sulaman with police in hot pursuit on Wednesday. The two local Bajau, aged 20 and 19, were rushed to the Tuaran Hospital for injuries following the 9.17pm mishap.

The incident took place when two policemen patrolling the area in a police vehicle along Jalan Lokup in Sepanggar ordered an Isuzu D-Max vehicle to pull over for inspections.

City Police Chief ACP M. Chandra said instead of stopping, the Isuzu four-wheel-drive suddenly sped off, prompting the policemen to give chase.

As they got to the Tuaran border along Jalan Sulaman, the Isuzu driver started to go against the flow in the opposite lane but then skidded, hit a streetlight, did several spins, hit a ditch before coming to a stop on the road.

The impact kicked up thick dust over the dark stretch, resulting in the police car crashing into the four-wheel-drive near the junction to the Rela Training Centre in Gayang.

The two Dusun policemen, both 35, however escaped unscathed.

Chandra said investigations showed the accident was due to the Isuzu driver's negligence as he had sped off in a reckless manner when ordered to stop by police.

The case, he said, is being probed for careless driving and for obstructing public servants from discharging their duties. - Sherell Ann Jeffrey
