Kota Kinabalu: Parti Warisan Sabah aims to set up a university for Sabah through an Education Ministry that it intends to also set up. Warisan Vice President Junz Wong said a Warisan government, when given the people's mandate, will set up Sabah's own university through Sabah's own Education Ministry, to ensure better and more efficient educational facilities and system to empower and assist students in Sabah.

"Warisan will work with the private colleges and educationists in Sabah to facilitate and help to set up the Sabah University.

"Of course the Sabah colleges who want to take part in this Sabah University programme and I'm confident that many, if not all, will be more than willing to participate as the educationists know it will be an important breakthrough for Sabah's education development.

"With Sabah University, we can introduce scholarship and study loans for Sabahans to enter Sabah University to pursue higher education.

"This is especially so for many of our qualified Sabahan students who score with flying colour results but are denied the equal opportunity by inconsistent policies.

"Students with UEC (Unified Examination Certificate) from Chinese schools will be recognised and therefore can also enrol into Sabah University programmes."

He said Warisan Sabah is also determined to develop Sabah's own educational hub to accommodate all the different types of schools, private colleges and the Sabah University, and therefore a Warisan government will find a piece of land sized 100-200 acres for this purpose and has identified the Sepanggar area as one of the potential locations.

There are basically two types of private colleges in Sabah, namely local private colleges such as KCC, SIA, AMC, ATI, etc, which number 7-8 while KL-based colleges such as Inti, Cosmo, PTPL, UniTar, etc, which number 17-18.

Warisan will plan for these colleges (those who are willing to take part in this educational project) to move into this hub, he said.

"The educational hub of this size will be able to provide students with a good study environment with all needed facilities, hostels, food courts and parking properly in place."

He said with this educational hub, stakeholders will be able to eliminate all uncertainties and problems which private colleges have been facing all these years in Sabah.

"The colleges do not need to move around searching for cheaper rental anymore.

Permanently their places are secured and therefore they can embark into bigger programmes and stay very focused on educational development.

"This direction will do a lot more good for both educational development as well as human capital development for Sabah.

"We may introduce incentive schemes for educational related services - such as affordable rental, utilities, purchase of books, computers for those who decide to participate in this education hub programmes.

Junz said a hub management will be set up by Warisan Sabah government and managed by a consortium of different colleges.

"However, a Warisan government will not be involved in the management but leave it to the private sector to handle this matter if all stakeholders opt for a joint venture option," he said.

These programmes are in line with another Warisan educational policy, announced by Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal, to set up vocational schools to train Sabahans to become skilled workers to boost human capital for Sabah.

With the education hub, Sabah can embark into education tourism programmes to woo international universities into Sabah.

"Warisan Sabah will ensure Sabah becomes the next educational hub to compete with other hubs around the region.

"Only with a Sabahan-oriented Warisan government will Sabahans realise this dream and make this a reality for our children and future generations to come."
