Kunak: Police believe they have thwarted fishbomb-making activities with the arrest of two Bajau Palau men during separate operations in Kampung Air Kunak Tiga, here, on Sunday and Monday. District Police Chief Supt Mohd Nasaruddin M. Nasir said the paperless duo, aged 25 and 30s, are believed to be from the Philippines.

The first arrest was made by a Special Branch team led by Insp. Edriansyah Sait who detained a man who was carrying a sack in a suspicious manner about 7.05pm on Sunday.

"The 25-year-old man was apprehended when he tried to flee," he said, adding that the sack contained 25 kilogrammes of urea fertiliser, believed to be used for making fishbombs.

The man was taken to the police station for questioning which led police to conduct another operation on Monday, focusing on an area identified as a site where fishbombs are processed.

The team this time led by ASP Abbas Saud and ASP Abd Rahman together with 15 personnel from the Criminal Investigation Department and the Special Task Force entered the water village about 2.30am.

The early morning raid saw the team having to wade in seawater as high as their thighs because the bridge which links to the coastal village had been "disconnected" by the villagers in their bid to stop the raid.

The team, however, detained the Bajau Palau in his 30s, after they raided two houses located near the village, and found a bottle with explosives for fishbombing.

"The man is believed to be involved in making and selling fishbombs in the district," said Nasaruddin, adding that police also seized a several items including a detonator, suspected to be materials used to make fishbombs.

"Investigations are still being done," said Nasaruddin who vowed to arrest the remaining individuals suspected to be involved in making and selling fishbombs here. - Ibrahim Tabir
