Keningau: The 2017 State-level Kalimaran festival will be celebrated in the month of July at the Murut Cultural Centre in Kg Pulong, Tenom.Sabah Murut Association President Datuk Rubin Balang said the festival is to bring together all the Muruts in the district to highlight and showcase the cultural customs of the ethnic group to the outside world and especially the tourists who come from abroad.

"Through this festival, I hope it will open the eyes of the present generation and future generations, especially the young Murut, so they never forget their origins and their identity.

"By that, it's very important for us to provide support as well as encouragement to today's generation to be steeped in the culture and customs of their own people before they are swept away by modernity."

He said this when opening the Keningau district-level Kalimaran Festival 2017 at Kg Limbawan.

Rubin, who is also Kemabong Assemblyman, thanked the Federal Government for having given a special allocation to the Murut Language Education Bureau led by Senator Datuk Dr Lucas Umbul which has pioneered the teaching of the Murut language.

"In addition, with the organisation of the Kalimaran Festival, in the past 10 years the State Government under the leadership of Datuk Seri Musa Aman has approved the allocation for organising the State-level Kalimaran Festival in the Murut Cultural House Centre at Kg Pulong, Tenom.

"Meanwhile, three years ago we also launched the district-level Kalimaran Festival through provisions from the Federal Government of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak," he added. - Eleanor Ruby
