Award-winning cop among 4 charged
Kota Kinabalu: A senior police officer who not too long ago was commended for outstanding work was among four police personnel charged with asking and receiving bribes at the Special Corruption Court here Thursday.Deputy Superintendent of Police Mohd Mahyudin Abdullah, 43, who is deputy chief of the Commercial Crime Investigation Department at the Sabah police headquarters, was charged along with Inspector Mohd Faiz Mohd Yusof, 32, Elly Boniface Sie @ Siu Tugok, 38, and Liza Ambau, 39, both of whom are Corporals.

Mahyudin and Faiz are facing three charges respectively, while Elly and Liza one charge each.

All of them pleaded not guilty before Sessions Court Judge Abu Bakar Manat.

On the first count, Mahyudin is accused of asking for a bribe of RM20,000 from one Josepin J. Langkan as an inducement to not take action against her under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

The crime allegedly took place between 9pm and 10.30pm on June 15, 2016 at a car park at the Mini Café and Bar in Lorong Austral, Taman Ridgeview, here.

The offence, under Section 16(a)(B) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, provides for a jail term of up to 20 years and fine of five times the amount involved or RM10,000, whichever is higher, on conviction.

On the second and third counts, Mahyudin, who had won the award for exemplary service in 2013, allegedly received bribes of RM500 and RM5,000 from Josepin for the same purpose on June 15 and 18, 2016.

Meanwhile, Faiz, on the first count, is accused of asking a RM6,000 bribe from one Wong Kian Shung, as inducement to not take action against one Dahlia Andreas who tested positive for drugs.

He allegedly committed the offence between 11pm and midnight on April 8, 2016 at the Penampang police station.

On the second and third counts, he allegedly accepted bribes of RM2,000 and RM1,000 from one Zaleha Brahim as inducement to not take action against one Rinciah Labik who also tested positive for drugs.

The crime allegedly took place at a car park near a restaurant in Donggongon town on Feb 9 and 10, 2016.

Elly and Liza are accused of demanding a bribe of RM6,000 respectively from Wong for the same purpose as Faiz, between 11pm and midnight on April 8, 2016 at the Penampang police station.

The court released Mahyudin on a bail of RM20,000 with RM8,000 deposited, Faiz was offered bail at RM15,000 with RM5,000 deposited, while Elly and Liza were released on a bail or RM10,000 with RM5,000 deposited and all of them were required to have a local surety.

Abu Bakar fixed April 26 for mention and that the case of Faiz, Elly and Liza would be jointly tried.

Earlier, counsel P.J Perira, who represented Mahyuddin, asked for a lower amount of bail saying his client was a recipient of an exemplary service award in 2013 and a widower with five children.

Counsel Luke Ressa Balang who defended Faiz, Elly and Liza also asked for a lower bail as according to him all his clients are still working and they have family to look after.

Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Rustam Sanip and DPP Razana Abd Hadi of the MACC appeared for the prosecution. - Cynthia D Baga
