Lahad Datu: The opening of 16 new Umno branches in the Silam division proves that the party and Barisan Nasional (BN) will continue to remain strong in Sabah. Silam Umno division head, Datuk Mohd Yusof Apdal, said the opening of the new branches raised the number to 486 and further strengthened Umno's position in Silam and Sabah and at the same time showed that the people still supported Umno and the BN strongly.

"The additional branches are from the Lahad Datu State Constituency which recorded an additional eight branches to 257 with four new branches each for Tungku (132) and Kunak (97)," he told reporters here Saturday.

Meanwhile, he said the opening of the branches dispelled the claim by the opposition Parti Warisan Sabah recently that many Umno members lad left the party.

"Parti Warisan Sabah had acted unrealistically by issuing a statement on the number of Umno members joining his party, although in actual fact the claim was untrue and Umno still had many applications for the formation of new branches," he added.

Yusof, who is the State Assemblyman for Lahad Datu, said the move by the opposition party to disseminate untrue information aimed to raise sensation and popularise the newly formed party.

Meanwhile, when met after handing over the keys of People Housing Project (PPR) to two families, Yusof said the PPR programme was among the efforts undertaken by Government to help the people.

He said the Government's efforts were not seasonal and Umno leaders provided services regardless of time and not only during election.

He hoped the people would continue to support the Barisan Nasional government, which was sincere in bringing development for the benefit and convenience of the people.

Earlier, when opening the Tungku Umno branch meeting at Tanjung Labian, Yusof reminded Umno members to reaffirm the principle of their struggle and loyalty to the party.

He said members should remember that being part of the party means that they are willing to fight for the party and not for personal interest.

"They should straighten their path and never change because of sentiment or based on emotion as it will undermine the party.

"As responsible people, we could not only think about ourselves. What is important is to stay loyal to party so that Umno could continue to serve the people," he added. - Efa Rizan
