Three killed in separate accidents

Kota Kinabalu: Three people were killed and several were injured in separate accidents in the State since Wednesday. Two motorcyclists were killed and a pillion seriously injured in accidents in Kuala Penyu and Beaufort on Wednesday and Thursday while an adolescent on Friday along the Tamparuli-Ranau road.The first fatality involved a 43-year-old Lundayeh, Charlie Kapong, from Kg Bamban, Sipitang. ADVERTISEMENT The man who worked as a general worker was heading towards Sipitang from Papar when he lost control of his motorcycle in the 4.40pm mishap near Kg Lumat, Km 10.5, Jalan Beaufort-Papar on Thursday. "The motorcycle swerved to the opposite lane and collided with a trailer lorry which was heading to Kota Kinabalu from Beaufort," said Beaufort Police Chief DSP Azmir Abd Razak.The motorcyclist was dragged several metres after getting caught under the lorry. The 51-year-old lorry driver escaped unscathed. ADVERTISEMENT The second fatality involved a 73-year-old Kadazan identified as Tikun Ensok from Kg Menumpang, Kuala Penyu, who succumbed to his injuries while on the way to Kuala Penyu Hospital. His 19-year-old pillion, Erharry Gustin sustained serious injuries and was also rushed to Kuala Penyu Hospital and subsequently sent to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital 2.

Azmir said initial investigations showed that the duo, were heading towards Kg Kiambor from Kampung Menumpang when the motorcycle they were on suddenly stalled on the left lane of the stretch near Kg Menumpang at about 11.15pm on Wednesday. A Toyota Crown, driven by a 19-year-old, failed to stop in time resulting in the car crashing into the motorcycle. The car driver escaped unscathed.Meanwhile, the 14-year-old boy was killed and six others slightly injured in the collision between a five-tonne lorry and three vehicles near Jalan Kg Lumat along Jalan Tamparuli-Ranau, in Tuaran, on Friday.Tuaran Police Chief DSP Abd Fuad Abd Malek did not reveal the boy's name except to say that he was in one of the vehicles with his family when the 7.45am tragedy occurred. Initial findings showed that the 49-year-old lorry driver was heading towards the city from Ranau when the front tyre of the lorry burst as he was negotiating a downhill bend. The impact caused the driver to lose control of the lorry which then crashed into the three vehicles – later identified by fire and rescue officials as a Toyota Hilux, Proton Saga and a Perodua Kancil – which came from the opposite direction. Early inspections by fire and rescue officials showed that the boy was in the Proton Saga with his four family members. "The lorry driver has been detained to facilitate investigations," said Fuad. The boy succumbed to severe head and body injuries at the scene, while six others, aged between one and 49, comprising three men, two women and a boy, sustained slight injuries. Eight personnel from the Tuaran Fire and Rescue Department arrived at the scene located some 18 kilometres away at about 8.55am.
