Kuala Lumpur: The registrations of 53 kindergartens (Taska) and 18 nurseries were revoked last year, said the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry. The ministry, in a written reply in the Dewan Rakyat Monday, said 10 kindergartens and nine nurseries had been charged in court, during the same period.

"The Social Welfare Department (of Malaysia) has issued written directives to 42 kindergartens and 16 nurseries while nine kindergartens and three nurseries were sealed from January to December 2016.

"Meanwhile, 14 kindergartens and four nurseries were issued compounds while three nurseries were ordered to close temporarily," said the ministry when replying to Nasrudin Hassan (PAS-Temerloh) who wanted to know the actions taken to tackle child abuse crimes at kindergartens and nurseries.

According to the written reply, the ministry via the Malaysian Social Welfare Department (JKM) had been entrusted to enforce the Child Care Centre Act 1984, Care Centres Act 1993, Child Care Centre Regulations 2012 and Care Centre Regulations 1994.

To ensure the safety of service delivery of child care centres was high, the ministry via JKM also monitored the nurseries, it said.

Meanwhile, the services of 210 interim teachers in Sarawak which expire this month have been extended and the teachers are given a second chance to attend the interview with the Education Services Commission

(SPP).

In a written reply at the Dewan Rakyat today, the Education Ministry said previously, the services of these teachers comprising 'open market' teachers who graduated from various public and private universities were not extended after this month because they failed in the interview or did not attend the session.

"The move was appropriate with the procedure stipulated because the SPP is a body that regulates the quality of Education Service Officers," the ministry said in reply to a question from Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong (BN-Hulu Rajang) who asked whether the ministry would terminate the contracts of interim teachers in the state.

The ministry explained that it was concerned about filling up the vacancies for teachers by ensuring that only teachers who were outstanding and of quality were absorbed as permanent teachers.

Meanwhile, the ministry said that the transition rate for pupils from the primary schools to Form 1 from the year 2013 until 2016 was between 98 and 99 per cent.

The percentage of students who completed secondary school education was between 85 and 90 per cent in 2013 until 2016.
