SGCC the champs

Kota Kinabalu: Team Sabah Golf and Country Club (SGCC) came from behind to beat team Sabah 14 ½ -13 ½ in the 1st Sabah Junior Match Play Championship held at SGCC on Monday.SGCC were 6-7 down in the morning session at the team four-ball event but came back strongly in the singles event by winning 8 ½ - 6 ½.

The inaugural event which was a brainchild of the SGCC Junior Golf Development Programme (JGDP) Committee saw the top 48 boy and girl junior golfers selected throughout Sabah competing against each other in a Ryder Cup format.

Club President Datuk Peter Khoo congratulated both teams for their great performance and sportsmanship.

"This tournament is one of the many programmes that we have planned over the next few years to identify and groom new talents to revive the sport in the state.

"Apart from providing platform for the juniors to excel in match play, our objective is also to instil discipline and hard work attitude among the junior golfers to prepare them for future State and national duties."

Khoo also expressed his gratitude to Sabah Sports Board Chairman Datuk Louis Rampas for his presence on behalf of the Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Tawfiq Abu Bakar Titingan at the opening ceremony.

He also thanked Pinsa for sponsoring the challenge trophy and all the parties involved in organising the event. – GL Oh
