Kota Kinabalu: The Chinese community in Sabah have been urged to answer the Minister of Special Tasks Datuk Teo Chee Kang's call to unite and make the right decision in the coming general elections in order to have a stronger political voice to pursue their rights and interests.Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Central Wanita leader Datin Shim Nyat Yun said it is imperative to do so as a larger representation in the government would also enable the Chinese to reject policies or bills that violate the Federal Constitution.

She concurred with Teo's remark made during the recent installation ceremony of the Kudat Hakka Association that the declining Chinese population ratio in Sabah has weakened the political strength of the community.

"It will be very difficult to fight for Chinese community rights if only few Chinese candidates from the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition are elected in the next general elections. The political power of the Chinese had not grown any stronger despite majority of the Chinese voters supporting the opposition parties in the last two general elections.

"Instead, the Chinese community is now struggling with policies and bills that not only threaten their interests, but also contravene the Federal Constitution and Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63)," she said in a statement here, Tuesday.

For instance, Shim said PAS tabled the Private Member's Bill to amend the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965 (Act 355) at a time when the opposition party had the strongest support from the Chinese electorate.

Despite having the second largest number of members of parliament (MPs), she said the Democratic Action Party (DAP) was incapable of stopping PAS from tabling the bill to amend Act 355.

"It shows that although almost all the Chinese electorate have swung to DAP in the last two general elections, we are in fact, losing our political footing in the country.

"The previous elections have proven that the Chinese voters can be united but they had been misled by DAP," she said.

Come the next general election, Shim urged the Chinese voters in Sabah and Malaysia to make a wise decision and support BN in order for the Chinese to have a louder voice within the government.

She said the opposition parties often contended that the Chinese would not be treated fairly even if they supported the government.

But in reality, she said vast Chinese support towards DAP since the 12th general elections has actually led to policies that have created much anxiety among the Chinese community, such as Act 355.

"Look at the DAP-led Penang government. Although Lim Guan Eng is the state's chief minister, Penang has implemented more and more Islamisation and halal policies, such as Islamic hospital, halal market and halal tourism.

"Hence, it is high time for Chinese voters to give up on DAP and support BN instead to increase Chinese representation in the government. This is the best way to safeguard the rights and interests of the Chinese community," said Shim.
