Gang robbery: Man denies

Kota Kinabalu: A 23-year-old local man was charged in the Sessions Court on Tuesday with gang robbery.Muhammad Arif Qushairi Jumadi pleaded not guilty before Judge Noor Hafizah Mohd Salim to the charge against him.

He is accused of robbing one Timothy Chua Fook Sheng, 19, of two smartphones and a laptop at 9am on Feb 19 this year at a house in Jalan Raja Udang, Kingfisher Phase 2, near here.

Arif allegedly committed the offence under Section 395 of the Penal Code which provides for a jail term of up to 20 years, and whipping, on conviction, together with an accomplice still at large.

The court set June 21 to hear the case and released Arif on a bail of RM7,000 with two local sureties.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Dinesh Raja appeared for the prosecution while counsel Aida Jaafar Mad Ariff defended Arif.

Meanwhile, in the Magistrate's Court, Arif also claimed trial to taking syabu.

He allegedly took the drug at 9.30am on Feb 22 at the Kepayan area, here.

Magistrate Cindy Mc Juce Balitus fixed Apr 24 for case management and offered Arif bail at RM2,000 with RM1,000 deposited in two local sureties.

Inspector James Paran prosecuted.

In another court, a local man was ordered to enter his defence on a charge of robbing another man.

Maarof Garib's defence was fixed for March 29 after the court ruled that the prosecution had established a prima facie case.

He is accused of robbing the man of a MyKad and a set of house keys at 1.15am on July 16, 2016 by the roadside near the Putatan Platinum Apartment, Putatan, near here.
