Kota Kinabalu: Coaches should not underestimate their role in developing their athletes, said Chairman of National Sports Institute Dato Sri Mohd Norza Zakaria on Thursday. He was speaking at the closing of the three-day programme East Malaysia Coaching Symposium with the theme 'The Key to Podium Excellence' at a hotel here.

"It is very important that you coaches should not underestimate your role in developing your athletes.

There is a "feel good" factor in your success.

"It is bigger than what you think you are today. If you can produce a champion you will make a lot of people happy and you are the person who can transform that," he addressed to the participants.

He called on all coaches to embrace sports science as part of their training programme.

"We are not like China. We do not have a large population but the quality of our population is super important to build a strong sporting nation.

"We need to produce complete athletes who are good in all aspects. Some athletes may be talented but they also need to have mental and physical strength.

"After the past three days here, I believe the ball is in your court now as we have provided you with the best people to basically pass on to you the knowledge and the skills that you need."

He also said Sabah should start the transformation now.

"It is the right time for Sabah to build a high-performance culture with the knowledge that you have learnt and I hope one day Sabah will become Sukma champions as well as being successful in other individual sports."

He also congratulated Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Tawfiq Abu Bakar Titingan and the ministry, Sabah Sports Council, ISN, all the speakers and Dr KH Tan, chairman of East Malaysia National Sports Institute Committee whom he said has worked tirelessly to ensure the success of the programme.

Some 120 participants took part in the three-day event organised by the Malaysia Committee of National Sports Institute, Sabah Ministry of Youth and Sports and Sabah Sports Council. - GL Oh
