Lahad Datu: The Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) seized 750 cartons of cigarettes worth RM45,000 and 20 wooden boats believed used in smuggling activities in two separate raids at the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (Esszone).Esscom Commander DCP Datuk Wan Abdul Bari Wan Abdul Khalid, in a statement on Friday, said an operation was launched by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) last Sunday following information which led to the detection of a boat off the Sungai Sibahat area.

The boat sped off when approached by the team who subsequently intercepted it, leading to the discovery of two men and a woman without documents together with the smuggled contraband suspected to be meant to be brought to a neighbouring country via Felda Sahabat waters.

Wan said the suspects and the seized items were taken to the Maritime Post at Felda Sahabat for further investigation under the Immigration Act 1959/1963 (Amendment 2002) and the Customs Act.

"During the operation, we also seized a boat and an engine that was used in the smuggling activities, all estimated worth RM60,000, including the cigarettes," he said.

In a separate operation, a team from the General Operations Force inspected and seized 20 wooden boats and a pump engine suspected to be used in smuggling activities or ferrying illegal immigrants into the country.

Wan said the boats measuring 10 to 15 feet long were taken to the GOF post for further action before being handed to the Marine Department. He also praised the success of security forces under Esscom that successfully foiled several smuggling attempts.

"The public should immediately report any suspicious activities including smuggling activities to the Esscom Operations Centre at 089-863181 for immediate action," he added. - Efa Rizan
