RM6.56m federal allocation for Sabah Chinese schools
Kota Kinabalu: The Federal Government had allocated a total of RM6.565 million to be distributed to 66 Chinese national schools in the State, a testimony of the Government's continuous commitment to the people.Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman said the Government is conscious of the need for a better education to achieve the nation's aspirations.

He said the State Government is deeply grateful to the Federal Government led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak for his continuous support in ensuring that the State continues to progress.

"At the same time, we in the State Government will always give our serious attention to the educational development in the State.

"Every year, the State Government provides a large sum of money to be distributed to all Chinese national schools, mission schools, private secondary schools, conforming schools (Chinese secondary schools) and non-Muslim religious bodies in Sabah," he said.

Musa said this during the handing over of special allocation cheques to government-aided Chinese schools, here, Monday. His speech was read by Special Tasks Minister Datuk Teo Chee Kang.

He added that although socio-economic programmes require funds, both the Federal and State governments will continue to assist vernacular and mission schools.

"The BN government pays serious attention to education development and we are also constantly striving to bridge the gap when it comes to facilities in urban and rural areas.

"We are aware that some schools especially in remote locations need funds for better facilities, maintenance and repair," he said.

Musa also said the State Government constantly works with the Federal Government, in particular the Ministry of Education, to seek solutions to improve facilities that will make teaching and learning more effective, and with that boost the standard of education in the State.

"No one should be left out from obtaining education in this day and age. In spite of the challenging economic outlook, the Federal Government has done its best to allocate what it can.

"Likewise, the State Government fulfils its yearly request for allocations by vernacular and mission schools as well as non-Muslim religious organisations," he said.

Meanwhile, speaking to reporters later, Teo urged those who wished to apply for similar monetary contributions from the State Government to do so before the closing date on April 30.

The applications, he said, must be submitted either to his office or to the State Treasury Department.

"This year's closing date is earlier with the hope that we can give the money earlier than usual.

Some people may accuse us of pushing the date forward because of the upcoming general election, but that is not true.

"We learned from past experience that the time required to process the applications was actually longer and as we all know, by August, our officers in the Treasury Department would already be busy with the State budget which is usually tabled in October or November.

"By pushing the closing date earlier, we hope we could then dispense the money earlier," he said. - Tracy Patrick
