Putatan: Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Yahya Hussin said action will be taken against village chiefs who entertained opposition figures or leaders who visited their areas. He declined to go into detail on further action to be taken against those alleged to have done so but said as they (village chiefs) were appointed as local leaders by the BN government, it was not proper for them to associate themselves with the opposition.

Yahya said the matter wasn't serious as it was just one or two incidences detected so far.

"There are many others who are waiting to take over the place of errant village heads," he told reporters at the Umno Putatan Branch cum Umno Putatan Election Machinery Meeting at Dewan Sri Putatan on Sunday.

Up to 2,000 Putatan Umno leaders, including branch chiefs, Wanita, Puteri and Youth chiefs, turned up for the event.

Yahya, who is also Putatan Umno Division Chief, said he also took the opportunity to remind Putatan Umno members to continue to be united as unity is the strength as the general elections would be held (in near future) and there was a need to show strength through unity.

"I also wish to remind them when they return to their respective areas to hold various activities to strengthen the party machinery as the general election can be held at any time and we want to be prepared."

Meanwhile, some 16,500 village security and development committee (JKKK) chairmen and village heads throughout the country will attend a course to obtain a Certificate in Village Governance in the Government's effort to raise their professional qualification to diploma level.

Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the course organised by his ministry was aimed at ensuring those involved in village administration were at par with officers in other government departments.

"Initially, 6,500 JKKK chairmen or village heads will undergo the three-day course to obtain the Certificate of Village Governance issued by Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL).

"For the second round, we will give village heads and JKKK chairmen the choice of undergoing the module at diploma level and others."

He told this to reporters after the presentation of appointment letters to JKKK chairmen at Bera District Council Hall, here, Monday, which was also attended by Kemayan Assemblyman Datuk Mohd Fadzil Othman.

Ismail Sabri who is also the Bera MP, said the Village Governance Course would be implemented in stages according to zones.

To date, he said the course had been implemented in the Central and Southern Zones involving Selangor, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan and Johor.

It will be followed by the Northern Zone covering Kedah, Perlis, Penang and Perak while the Eastern Zone will involve Pahang, Terengganu and Kelantan, with the modules covering all relevant fields such as village, financial and leadership management.

Earlier, at another event, Ismail Sabri called on 1Malaysia People's Aid (BR1M) recipients to open bank accounts to facilitate payment.

The move, he said, would also make it easier for the recipients to withdraw the money any time without the hassle of going to the bank and waiting long as experienced by some senior citizens.

For Bera district itself, he said there were 18,827 people eligible to receive BR1M involving RM16.762 million and most of them had received BR1M in their bank accounts. - Neil Chan
