Kota Kinabalu: Sabah's junior tennis player, Darius Wong Yui Qian won the boys Under-14 singles and Under-15 doubles gold medals in the recently concluded the KDLTA-Greensport tennis tournament.Darius defeated Sarawak's Mervin Tiang 6-2, 6-1 to clinch gold in the boys Under-14 singles.

He also partnered Vekaash from Selangor in the boys Under-15 doubles and defeated the Sarawak top pairing of Cornelius Sia/Mervin Tiang to become the doubles champions.

Meanwhile in the girls singles, Clarissa got the silver medal for the Under-14 category.

Sabah Tennis Association (STA) President Johnson Koh was happy to learn of the results.

It is hoped that Darius can continue to be consistent to follow Sabah's top player Christian Didier Chin's achievements.

Meanwhile, Christian bagged his first ITF singles title on home soil in the Kuala Lumpur ITF tournament on Sunday, after a heart-breaking doubles final.

In the doubles he partnered another Malaysian Takeshi Koey but lost to the Pakistani-Indian pair of Ali Mooraj and Karan Srivastava in three sets after taking the first set and leading 3-1 in the super tie break third set.

However, in the singles Christian was his confident self and pushed on for a 6-1 and 6-4 win over Dev Javia from India.

Christian was overjoyed with the win and is yearning for more. He has now broken into the top 200 singles ranking in the world and is gearing towards breaking into the top 100 to enable him to get direct entry into the tournament proper of the Junior Grand Slams.

Before that he will focus on the ITF men's later this year.

Johnson was at the Titiwangsa courts to give support together with Christian's father Christopher and Takeshi's father Koey.

Christopher urged the STA president to assist him to find financial assistance to enable Christian to go for other tournaments as Lawn Tennis Association of Malaysia (LTAM) says MSN funds are limited.

Johnson said he would together with MSN Sabah and Christopher look into it more aggressively.

So far Christopher has been funding those tournaments that LTAM has not included in the funding and Johnson would like to appeal to all authorities and bodies to chip in to help.
