RM1.66m grants for 18 Sabah welfare bodies

Kota Kinabalu: Eighteen voluntary welfare organisations in the State received a shot in the arm with the provision of grants worth a total of RM1.668 million on Wednesday.Community Development and Consumers Affairs Minister Datuk Jainab Ahmad said the grants are part of the RM2.03 million allocated by the Sabah Community Services Council this year.The Sabah Community Services Council is an agency under Jainab's Ministry.ADVERTISEMENT "These grants are a show of support from the State Government to aid voluntary welfare organisations to conduct their respective activities, programmes and services."The State Government has always been concerned with the needs of community welfare and it encourages voluntary welfare organisations to work together with the Government in the effort of building a loving society," she said during the grant presentation ceremony at the Sabah Community Services Council building, here, Wednesday.Jainab reminded the recipients to use the grants prudently and responsibly."The Government's financial aid for voluntary welfare organisations is limited and subject to existing guidelines.ADVERTISEMENT "As such, the Sabah Community Services Council will not be able to fully cater to applications made by voluntary welfare organisations, especially to expand their premises and repair works."She said the Government needs the cooperation and contribution from various quarters, including corporate firms.

"Hence, the involvement of corporate bodies in community programmes is highly welcomed," she said.Sabah Cheshire Home received RM320,000, Society for the Sabah Heart Fund (RM300,000), Sabah Society for the Deaf (RM200,000), Sabah Kidney Society (165,000), Sabah Society for the Blind (RM110,000), Council of Sabah Senior Citizens Associations (RM101,000), Malaysian Diabetes Association Sabah Branch (RM81,000), Malaysian Red Crescent Sabah Branch (RM80,000), Sabah Mental Health Association (RM65,000), Sabah Family Planning Association (RM40,000), Malaysian Leprosy Relief Association Sabah Branch (RM38,000), Sabah Women's Action-Resource Group (RM32,000), Child Sabah (RM30,000), Sabah Government Pensioners Association (RM30,000), Sabah Anti-Tuberculosis Association (RM25,000), Sabah Childcare Centre Services Association (RM21,000), Sabah Thalassaemia Association (RM20,000) and Sabah Single Mothers Association (RM10,000). - Ricardo Unto
