Van ends up in uncompleted sewer: Man drowns
Kota Kinabalu: A man was killed while another slightly injured when the Nissan van they were travelling in crashed and plunged into a sewerage treatment plant under construction near the Klias Baru roundabout at Km 4, Jalan Beaufort-Papar, Tuesday. The deceased Andrew Mustal, a 27-year-old of Tombonuo descent, worked for a firm specialising in stray dog vaccination.

He was a passenger in the van driven by his 22-year-old Kadazan colleague who escaped with minor injuries.

Their documents stated that both were from Kg Noosob in Penampang.

Eight Beaufort Fire and Rescue Station personnel led by Runzee Thani were deployed to the scene about four kilometres away following an 8.33pm distress call.

Rescue operations ended about 9.58pm, with the injured driver being rushed to the hospital on an Emergency Medical Response Services ambulance.

Beaufort Police Chief DSP Azmir Abd Razak said initial findings showed that the duo were heading to the city from Labuan when the 8.15pm tragedy took place.

He said the driver failed to realise that there was a roundabout along the stretch resulting in him losing control of the van which crashed into the sewerage plant located on the left side of the roundabout.

Further investigations showed that the plant is still under construction and contained about six metres of water.

The driver managed to climb out of the van but his passenger who was trapped was subsequently pronounced dead at the scene due to drowning. Azmir said the driver was not suspected of being intoxicated when the mishap took place during clear weather. Investigations are continuing. - Sherell Ann Jeffrey
