Close relatives in top party posts common: Kurup
Kota Kinabalu: Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah (PBRS) President Tan Sri Joseph Kurup (pic) said it is not uncommon for close relatives to be in top positions of a political party."Just look at Parti Keadilan Rakyat's leadership which has been passed down from husband to wife and daughter (in reference to former Opposition de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim whose presidency has been taken over by his wife Datin Seri Wan Azizah Wan Ismail while their daughter Nurul Izzah Anwar is the party's Vice-President).

"And look at DAP (referring to Opposition Leader Lim Kit Siang and son Lim Guan Eng who is the party's Secretary-General). We should not look at this factor alone if we are truly committed to the cause of the rakyat," he said in a statement, Saturday.

He was referring to a front page report in the Daily Express titled "Don't Compare PBRS To North Korea" where his son, Arthur, who is party Deputy President, responded to critics who tend to compare the party and the North Korean Workers' Party in terms of political power being passed down from presidential father to son.

Arthur also denied that the party practises nepotism or that it is an "all-in-the-family" party.

On the contrary, Kurup said, we should look at one's commitment to the rakyat, one's capability and sincerity to serve with the interests of the people at heart.

"Thus the question of relationship is irrelevant. My son Arthur is even now giving his service to the rakyat without any pay or allowance. Hence equating PBRS with a Communist Party is the worst," he contended.

PBRS Wanita Chief Zainon Hj Kayum, meanwhile, clarified that she is the Women Division Chief, and not Puan Sri Melinda Kurup (Kurup's wife), as reported.
