Chong Wei strolls into last four

Kuching: Datuk Lee Chong Wei strolled into the semi-final of the Malaysia Open after beating rising player Jeon Hyeok Jin of South Korea.Chong Wei took only 45 minutes to send the young South Korean packing, 21-11, 21-14, in a quarter-final tie at Perpaduan Stadium in Petra Jaya Friday.

The win put the world number one player and top seed in the tournament, on course for his 12th Malaysia Open singles title.

For the record, it was the first meeting between the two players.

Chong Wei, who won the 2016 Malaysia Open title, is a sure bet to make the final as he is not expected to have much problem of winning the semi-final tie.

He is scheduled to meet Vincent Wong Wing Ki of Hong Kong who was given a walkover after the third seed, Chen Long of China withdrew from the tournament.

Chen Long's absence has improved Chong Wei's chances of winning the tournament wihch offers total prizes of US$600,000 (RM2.64 million).

Speaking to the media after the match, Chong Wei said that he was relieved to be able to beat his young opponent.

"Jeon Hyeok Jin is only 21 years-old, a lot younger than me. He is a fast player but I did not give him any chance at all," he added.

Asked about his semi-final clash, Chong Wei said he plans to enjoy the match tomorrow.

"I want to win a dozen Malaysia Open titles and hope that nobody can break my record," he added.

Meanwhile, Jeon Hyeok Jin said he was nervous when playing against Chong Wei in front of the local crowd as it was their first meeting.

However, the emerging South Korean said that he 'enjoyed' playing against the world champion.
