'Tap China mart via expo' call

Kota Kinabalu: Malaysian External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade) Director for China (Market Access Section), Ong Yew Chee called on local entrepreneurs to participate in the 14th China- Asean Expo (Caexpo) in Nanning, China on Sept 12 to 15."Caexpo is one the three largest events in China other than the World Forum and the World Economic Forum and is organised to promote the Asean-China Free Trade Agreement (ACFTA) between the 10 member countries of Asean and China.

"Matrade conducts cooperation with Asian countries and the Chinese government makes Caexpo a platform for Malaysian companies to promote their products and services offered.

"We strongly encourage the entrepreneurs to participate in the expo to promote local products and unique tourism sector," he said during a press conference after the opening of the Caexpo2017 Roadshow here Thursday.

Ong said, until now, a total of 52 companies from the East Coast Economic Region Development Council (Ecer), the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (Mosti) and the Malaysian Cooperatives Commission (SKM) have signed up to participate in the expo.

Ong also expressed his intention to ask the State government to participate in the 'City of Charm' exhibition managed by Tourism Malaysia to promote tourism in the country.

"We will offer Sabah to open the 'City of Charm' exhibition because this State managed to attract more than two million Chinese tourists last year.

"In addition to the exhibition 'City of Charm', two more exhibitions to be held namely the Pavilion Commodity managed by Matrade and Investment Forum by the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (Mida)," he said.

Matrade has targeted investments of RM350 million through Caexpo 2017 compared to the previous year's RM329.6 million and RM214.6 million in 2015.

Present at the ceremony were Consul General of the Peoples Republic of China in Kota Kinabalu Chen Peijie, China-Asean Expo Secretariat Deputy Secretary-General, Huang Pingxi and Director of Matrade Sabah, A.Rashid Mohd Zain.
