Biggest MMEA vessel for ops
Kota Kinabalu: The KM Pekan will further strengthen and reinforce the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency's (MMEA) capability in its operations to monitor the nation's waters. Commanding Officer Maritime Captain Robert Teh Geok Chuan said the vessel started its first operation in early April from Kuantan Port and arrived in Sabah on April 21."KM Pekan is one of two offshore patrol vessels awarded by the Japanese government to MMEA last year.

The vessel was launched by the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak on March 21 in conjunction with the 2017 Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace (LIMA) Exhibition.

"This vessel is different from other assets because it is able to stay offshore for a month and is the biggest vessel owned by MMEA and operated by 50 personnel. Additionally, the 92-metre vessel is able to reach up to 20 knot speed and equipped with a helipad and the latest radar system.

"It is also equipped with three units of fibre boats with stern launching as well as diving equipment, diving team and a mini hospital," he said.

According to Teh, the range of monitoring of the national waters can be extended through helicopters that land and refill on the vessel without having to go back to base.

He said the vessel which reached here last Friday is now in a series of tour of Sabah and Sarawak to introduce MMEA's newest asset to the public while at the same time, conduct monitoring exercise of the national waters.

The tour would also include the East Sabah Security Zone (Esszone) areas such as Tawau, Semporna and Sandakan.
