RM250,000 thumbs-up to Labuan Lions Club
Labuan: Member of Parliament Datuk Rozman Isli delivered a pat on the back for the Lions Club of Labuan Mandarin for successfully raising RM250,000 for its pet "House of Love" project.Rozman, who was guest of honour at the event, said he noticed from day one of the groundbreaking ceremony for the project four years ago that the small army of Lions on the island worked like ants to make the project a success.

"Their unwavering determination and attitude finally paid off with the RM6 million project now only a step away from becoming a reality."

Describing it as a story of inspiration, Rozman said the important point is that despite the slowdown on the island people were still prepared to part with cash for a worthy cause.

He said it may not be a big deal for bigger towns like Kuala Lumpur or Kota Kinabalu collecting such amount in the name of charity, but for Labuan it certainly is, considering that the island's population is not more than 100,00.

He said another point of interest is that the club went ahead with the project despite without any assurance of big support and getting government aid remained in uncertainty.

"Labuan Lions' action is brave, they did not wait for durians to fall, but worked on their own most of the time," remarked Rozman.

"A final amount of RM800,000 is needed to complete the project and the success of the food fair is essential," said organising chairman of the food fair, Chin Ken Yin, who thanked everybody for their contributions, support, donations and sponsors.

Among the main donors and sponsors were the Hakka Association, Foo Chow Association, Labuan Buddhist Association, Ann Kway Association, Labuan Amateur Basketball Association, Moral Uplifting Society, Labuan Point Hotel, Marine Hotel, Kommuniti 1Malaysia Zone 16, 19, 20 and 21, Kwang Hui Zhao, Kan Peo Ping, Dorsett Grand, Fook Yuen, LC of Labuan Mandarin, Ignol Snow House, Globart Art-face Painting, Green Cottage Plants, F&N, 5-Star Mineral Water, Klinik Dr Tan, Kong Kitchen and Peniaga2 and Penaja Kechil, and others.

Club Chairman Jessica Lee Chin Peri said the fair also included other activities such as sale of plants for Earth Day and car wash.

Of the amount contributed, the Foo Chow Association topped the list with RM10,460. - Sohan Das
