Kota Kinabalu: A total of 440 local teachers will be getting their postings in schools across Sabah from April until May this year under the 90:10 initiative. In stating this, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Joseph Entulu Belaun said the Federal Government is on track to realise the education sector's devolution of power, that is to ensure 90 per cent of teaching posts in Sabah would be filled by locals by 2018. Sabah needs another nine per cent to reach the target, said Entulu, quoting Education Ministry figures. ADVERTISEMENT "With this, I am confident the target can be attained by next year," he said during his engagement programme with the Education Service Commission here on Tuesday. The 90:10 initiative in the education sector in Sabah and Sarawak was launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak on Malaysia Day (Sept 16) two years ago here, as part of the devolution of powers from Federal to the State. Several initiatives had been carried out since then including the appointment of 576 Sabahan graduate teachers from Teachers' Colleges in July last year. Citing 2017 as the "Year of Delivery" in the civil service, Entulu said more 'empowerments' had been done in the education sector to ensure the devolution of powers would achieve its goals. ADVERTISEMENT Among them was the appointment of Sarawakians as chairpersons to the Interviewing Board by the Education Service Commission last year, which is now also expanded to Sabah. "Following this decision, the commission has appointed 20 Sabahan officers to become chairpersons for the Education Service Board in Sabah.

"Such appointments showed the government fully trust that Sabahans too can execute the work," said Entulu, adding that their appointments will be for two years until April 30, 2019. The appointment would now see teacher candidates being interviewed by locals instead of West Malaysian interviewers previously. Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.

Among those appointed include Education Director Datuk Maimunah Suhaibul. Furthermore, Entulu said the implementation of any form of candidate screening, reports, delegation of interview schedules will now be carried out by the commission's State office, adding that the commission's office will also serve as a central reference center for education officers in Sabah. - Jason Santos
