Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Anglers Association President, Datuk Wilfred Lingham said his side was committed towards promoting angling activities in the State as a way to attract more foreign tourists to come and visit Sabah. "This would also assist in developing the tourism sector in the State," he said in reference to the increasing numbers of foreign participants in the Sabah International Fishing Tournament (SIFT) 2017 which will be held at Layang Layang island at the Spratly Islands area.

He said this after officiating the flagging off of the SIFT 2017 participants on Tuesday at the Sutera Harbour Marina.

A total of 98 anglers, including foreign participants from Brunei Darussalam, China and Singapore participated in the six-day competition which will end on April 30.

He added that SAA will also be holding a fish auction of the winning catches.

The proceeds from the auction will be handed over to charitable bodies to assist those in need.

Last year the Single Mothers Association received the proceeds of the auction.

Meanwhile, Wilfred said SAA was also cooperating with the Malaysian Navy (TLDM) to ensure the safety of all participants during the competition period.

Also present were Sutera Harbour Marina Golf & Country Club General Manager Rick Blackie and Sabah Tourism Board Deputy General Manager (Marketing) Suzaini Sabdin Ghani.
