MyKads within a day now at Sipitang NRD
Sipitang: The rural communities from nearby districts and Lawas in Sarawak can now benefit from a faster replacement of their old Malaysian identity cards as well as in getting the document for their 12-year-old children following the installation of a printing machine for MyKad at the National Registration Department (NRD) district office here.Sipitang Member of Parliament Datuk Sapawi Ahmad said they can obtain their MyKads in less than an hour or within 24 hours as long as there are no problems with their applications compared to the past where they have to wait for about a month for the document.

"I am very pleased and thankful to NRD for placing the printing machine for issuance of MyKads here that will cater to the needs of the locals, especially from nearby districts, and addressing issues faced by those living at the border like in Long Pasia between Sabah and Kalimantan.

"In fact, it is also the right move as Sipitang is a transit district where its township is a border town with Sarawak, Kalimantan in Indonesia and gateway for tourists and visitors from Brunei Darussalam," he said.

Sapawi, who is also Yayasan Sabah Director, said this to Daily Express when officiating at the installation of printing machine for the MyKad at the NRD Sipitang office, on Wednesday.

Also present were Sindumin Assemblyman Datuk Ahmad Bujang, NRD Sabah Director Datuk Ismail Ahmad, NRD Sipitang head Abdullah @ A.Hadie Awang Adi and other senior officials from the Immigration Department and Sipitang police.

Sapawi said the availability of the machine here will save transportation costs the applicants would otherwise bear as they do not have to go to Kota Kinabalu to change their old identity cards or when applying for MyKads for their 12-year-old children.

Meanwhile, Ismail told Daily Express that the printing machine started operations here on Oct 17 last year, to facilitate and expedite the process of applying for replacement of the MyKads and for new MyKads for 12-year-olds.

He said the machine can accommodate up to 300 pieces of MyKad per day.

Prior to the installation of the machine here, Ismail said applications for the MyKad would be sent to the NRD headquarters in Putrajaya and will take between two weeks and a month to complete the process before the applicants can pick them up at the NRD office here.

Since the installation of the machine here on Oct 17 last year up to April 21 this year, he said a total of 1,918 pieces of MyKad have been printed with an average of 70 pieces per day.

"This machine is the eighth operating in Sabah with two such machines in Kota Kinabalu, including the Urban Transformation Centre (UTC) and in Keningau, Sandakan, Kota Marudu, Tawau and Papar.

"The machines were installed in the respective NRD offices in 2012, 2013 and last year and have been accommodating the needs of the people to get the identification document quickly," he said. - Hayati Dzulkifli
