PETALING JAYA: Gavin Kyle Green has made it to the top 200 in world golf. Thanks to a joint runner-up finish at the Yeangder Heritage in Taiwan on Sunday, the 23-year-old Malaysian soared from last week's No. 236 to 198 in the latest world rankings, reported The Star.

He is sandwiched between 2009 British Open champion Stewart Cink of the United States at No. 197 and England's Ian Poulter, a winner of 12 European Tour titles, at No. 199.

Gavin is now just eight rungs from beating Iain Steel's record as the highest-ranked Malaysian at No. 191.

Steel achieved the feat after finishing second in the European Tour's Singapore Masters in 2007.

Gavin's giant leap was a result of some impressive results over the last eight weeks. He was at No. 355 in March but moved up the rankings with two runner-up finishes at the European Tour's Indian Open and Asian Development Tour's PGM UMW Championship in Malaysia.

Gavin's immediate focus is to remain in the top five of the Asian Tour Order of Merit.

He climbed up to fourth after collecting US$29,950 (RM113,000) in Taiwan to take his season earnings to US$239,777 (RM1.04mil).

If Gavin can retain his position, he stands a chance of qualifying for some lucrative events like the US PGA Tour-sanctioned CIMB Classic in Kuala Lumpur and World Golf Championship-HSBC Champions in Shanghai, China, later this year.

"I'm trying to (remain in the top five). I have gained so much experience and my swing is improving.

These factors have contributed to my good form of late.

"I just got to keep playing well and produce the best results I can every time ... then I believe everything will fall into place," said Gavin, who turned pro in 2015 after a chequered amateur career.
