Sandakan: The Welfare Department here is looking for the next-of-kin of a boy (pic) who was found unkempt but otherwise dressed and carrying a bag in front of a house at Kampung Gum-Gum, Mile 16, here, on March 16. In a statement Monday, Welfare Officer Sharmila Marzuki said civilians found the child at about 2pm. However, the boy was not able to give them any information because he was dumb.

The boy was subsequently taken to the Welfare Department for further action on March 24.

"We have referred the child to the Duchess of Kent for examination and he is now placed at a shelter in Kota Kinabalu under the Order of Temporary Custody Subsection 19(2) of the Child Act 2001," she said, adding that the child was handed over on March 27.
