Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Inland Revenue Board (IRB) launched "Ops Kutip" here Monday to collect arrears in taxes from 361 tax defaulters totalling RM17 million. IRB Malaysia Chief Executive Officer-cum-Director-General Datuk Sabin Samitah said staff involved in the operation will be covering the surrounding areas of the city, Likas, Luyang, Menggatal, Penampang, Inanam, Tanjung Aru, Putatan, Tuaran and Papar.

He said the tax defaulters are individuals and companies.

The programme is conducted simultaneously with a national programme held for two days in all 13 IRB branch offices nationwide.

Sabin was optimistic that the agency will be able to collect 90 per cent to the total tax arrears through the programme.

He said nationwide there are 3,838 tax default cases with a total amount of RM328 million.

The "Ops Kutip", he said, was launched to speed up collection of the tax arrears.

Sabin said the IRB has been looking seriously into cases involving tax evasion and failure to settle tax payments on time.

"What more when tax evasion involves underground economy or cash transactions.

This creates an imbalance in the society as those who have an excess income go unreported.

The purchasing power of this group of people can cause prices, say for example houses, in the market to rise so high until others especially those who survive on monthly salaries can't afford them," he said when officiating the programme at the IRB branch office, here.

He said during the implementation of the programme, IRB staff will promote better public awareness on every taxpayer's responsibility to keep records, properly declare their income and pay their taxes on time.

As for tax defaulters who have difficulty to settle their arrears in full, Sabin said they can request to pay in installments.

"They can request to the State IRB Director but there's no guarantee that we will consider," he said.

He added that the agency has formed its legal branch to handle all cases against tax defaulters.

Actions that can be taken, he said, include winding up of companies, declaring individuals bankrupt or seizing of properties. - Leonard Alaza
