Ex-envoy claims trial to cheating

Kuala Lumpur: A former Canadian ambassador to the United Arab Emirates has been charged in a magistrate's court here for allegedly cheating a Russian man over a fake permanent resident (PR) card.Kenneth William Lewis was accused of cheating Alexander Kashif Al Ghataa, 54, of US$20,000 (RM88,000).

The 69-year-old allegedly committed the offence at BLS Consultants Malaysia Sdn Bhd, Menara Standard Chartered, here on Aug 23 last year.

He faces a maximum 10 years in jail and can be fined if convicted under Section 420 of the Penal Code.

Lewis pleaded not guilty after the charge was read to him.

Lawyer Sangeet Kaur Deo, who represented Lewis, told the court that her client had lived in Malaysia for more than five years.

"He has a house in Lumut, Perak. His wife is a Malaysian and she is sick with end-stage cancer.

"The accused is not a flight risk. We ask for an appropriate and reasonable bail," she said.

Magistrate Nurul Nadia Abdul Razak fixed bail at RM10,000 with two sureties.

"The accused must report to the Manjung police station every month," the magistrate said.

The case is fixed for mention on June 21. DPP K. Vasugi prosecuted.
